Update on E-Way Bill Functionalities Implementation

This advisory announces an extension to the implementation dates for two key functionalities within the E-Way Bill system.

Background

Previously, through a GSTN Advisory dated May 20, 2026, it was communicated that the following features would be introduced starting June 15, 2026:

  • Mandatory Capture of 'Ship To GSTIN': This applies to transactions involving a 'Bill-To/Ship-To' scenario.
  • Voluntary Closure of E-Way Bill: A new feature allowing taxpayers to voluntarily close E-Way Bills.

Reason for Extension

Following feedback and requests from trade and industry stakeholders, concerns were raised regarding the need for additional time to implement necessary system changes, conduct thorough testing, ensure API/ERP readiness, and update master data across the taxpayer ecosystem.

Revised Implementation Date

To ensure a seamless transition and allow adequate preparation time for taxpayers, GSPs, ERP providers, and other relevant parties, it has been decided to postpone the implementation of both the mandatory 'Ship To GSTIN' and the voluntary E-Way Bill closure functionalities.

Both features will now become effective from August 1, 2026, instead of the previously announced June 15, 2026.

Call to Action

All taxpayers, GSPs, ERP providers, and other stakeholders are strongly encouraged to complete all required system modifications, testing, and operational preparations before this revised implementation date.
